2D Echocardiography is a non-invasive ultrasound test that creates moving pictures of your heart. It provides detailed information about heart structure, function, and blood flow. This painless test helps cardiologists diagnose various heart conditions.

What Does 2D Echo Show?

  • Heart Size: Chamber dimensions and wall thickness
  • Pumping Function: Ejection fraction (EF)
  • Valve Function: Stenosis or regurgitation
  • Heart Wall Motion: Areas of poor contraction
  • Congenital Defects: Structural abnormalities
  • Pericardial Effusion: Fluid around heart
  • Blood Clots: Within heart chambers

Types of Echocardiography

Transthoracic Echo (TTE)

Standard echo performed through the chest wall - most common type

Stress Echo

Echo performed before and after exercise to detect blockages

Doppler Echo

Evaluates blood flow through heart and valves

Transesophageal Echo (TEE)

Detailed images from esophagus - for complex cases

Preparation

  • No special preparation for standard echo
  • For stress echo: Avoid eating 3-4 hours before
  • Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing
  • Continue regular medications unless advised otherwise
